Abstract

Aim: To rehabilitate a patient of microstomia in need of a fixed dental prosthesis. Background: Microstomia, is a common terminology used for patients with restricted mouth opening. It may be caused by any damage to the facial nerve and subsequent fibrosis on facial muscles on the affected side. Patients with restricted mouth opening have difficulty maintaining oral hygiene due to limited access. Hence, dental decay and periodontal problems have been found to be prevalent in the affected population. Case description: A 42-year-old female patient reported to the Department of Prosthodontics Crown & Bridge at Mahatma Gandhi Dental College & Hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, with a chief complaint of pain in her lower right back tooth for the last 2 months. The patient gave a medical history of a parotid tumor on the right side of her face, behind her ear, which was excised at the age of 15 and led to facial nerve paralysis along with restricted mouth opening. On extraoral examination, it was observed that the patient had gross facial asymmetry on the right side. Conclusion: The present case report describes simplified locking designs of the tray segments, which could be used for both dentulous and edentulous patients for the fabrication of custom trays. Using the pin-lock method of tray fabrication stated in this case report, a clinician can make an accurate impression with increased ease. The method described in the report is not only comfortable for the patient but also yields accuracy and precision. Clinical significance: Using the pin-lock method of tray fabrication stated in this case report, a clinician can make an accurate impression with increased ease.
